"Killers, Traitors, & Runaways"

A company of seven unite. Heroes not of virtue, but of circumstance. Authur Lucas Aubrey Paynter tells a wondrous tale of Killers, Traitors, & Runaways. I'm surprised to see very few reviews. I really like this writer as I think his idea for the heroes is very unique and his style is great. The plot moves along pretty quickly and while at times this does feel a bit clunky, it doesn't take long for you to immerse yourself in the world. Despite the supernatural aspect of the story, the author makes it natural to readers thanks to the authenticity of all the characters. The kind of characters you would love to hang out with. Loved it.

'A Dream of Ashes'

A Dream of Ashes by Orlando Sanchez is a tense fantasy-thriller. A mysterious plot surrounding Ava, who works in the Mystic Investigative Division. But when the Division turns on her, she goes on the run. Addictive is one word that I'd use to describe this novel. I wish I could say more but given that there is a lot that can’t be said because of spoilers, I would say its a story rich in detail, full of the sights, sounds, and smells that make you feel as though you're actually there. One of those books that was just a joy to lose myself in. Some may hate cliffhangers but this actually worked for this book. I can’t wait to read book 2, I'm wondering what this author has up his sleeve next.

'Comorbid'

Turn on the lights, lock the windows and set the security alarm, as 'Comorbid' is one of those novels that hooks you in from the start, and keeps upping the game until the last page. A psychological thriller full of rich characters, plot twists and a variety of well written conflicts. Author Lorelei Logsdon is a strikingly powerful storyteller, that gets you asking - Who to trust? Who to believe? & What the hell just happened? So needless to say, I recommend this "uncomfortable" journey :)

'Finding the Raven'

Finding the Raven by Patty Dickson Pieczka is a gripping thriller that kept me sitting on the edge of my bed guessing what would happen next. I would say this novel is probably classified as an historical-magic-murder-mystery !! :) This fascinating thrill ride was set in 1900's America and I think the dynamics and the evolving relationship between Julia and Rose was one of the most satisfying parts of the book. Definitely recommended if you like mysteries and strong women characters with a lot of heart. 5/5 (My thanks to Patty for sending me a review copy.)

'The Aspect Wars'

Readers will enjoy this, as long as they are fans of fantasy, magic and sorcerery. A short prequel to the book Elara (The Fist of Etan) it's a story that has writing that is somewhat dense. The characters were well written and you did feel a bond with them while reading. The premise of the story was interesting also, and well told. I'm excited to see where the story expands to, and if this book is any indication, I'll greatly enjoy diving deeper into mysteries and lore which were only hinted at here.

'Bloodline'

Bloodline by Gabriella Messina is a fast paced adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed. I have read many werewolf novels, and this one is my favourite, by a landslide. It's hard to be original in this genre, but the author keeps it fresh with believable, well-drawn characters. Wether its dealing with a large cast of main characters, or those with shorter roles, I found it easy to see the individual identity of each one.  I hope to read more from Gabriella and can recommend this for a good read.

Lovers' Tide

I was under the weather for a few days and these were perfect short stories to read as I rested. All the stories are well written. I would recommend reading the stories in order as they play off each other very well. I read the first story and thought 'that's my favourite' - but then the 2nd one became my favourite - and so on. This is a wonderful book for you to enjoy and it would also make a beautiful gift someone who enjoys reading. Highly recommend.

'Solid Stone'

When it comes to 'Solid Stone' by E.G. Patrick, my opinion is to go into it blind. I say that because the way this heartbreaking and beautifully erotic story unfolds is just to die for, at least for me it was! Violet knows the alluring Adam Stone is renowned in the high-powered corporate world. He consumes all of Violet's thoughts. A control freak, Adam is determined to possess all of her. They embark on a passionate odyssey. How far is Violet willing to go to keep their relationship alive? Secrets are exposed leading to an explosive climax. This is a very well written story and even though I have not read a lot of this type of genre, I enjoyed reading it. This author kept my interest from the first meeting between the two main characters.

'Hero of My Dreams'

'Hero of My Dreams' by J.R. Pitts focuses on the princess of a peace loving planet (Arklardin). She is forced to fight for the freedom of her people against the evil Lord of Zharburk. This book has fantasy with intrigue, and romance with adventure. Written in an easy to read style, this book proves what a born storyteller J.R. Pitts is, because the entire driving force behind the book is the fact that it is unashamedly a fantasy story. With vivid atmosphere deftly brought to life, the author's writing goes beyond creating a story in our minds; it truly feels like you’re walking in their footsteps. The fact that he manages to blend Sci-fi with the Medieval seamlessly is even more spectacular. The attention to detail only serves to make this story even more enjoyable. Can an earthling prove worthy of a princess' love. Can a princess find the hero of her dreams? Open this book to find out.

'Born To Magic'

A good story will sell itself on each page, without having to rush along as if the reader has the attention span of a goldfish. It's subtly evident from the beginning that Born To Magic is worth reading. A sci-fi and fantasy story showing an humanity with Paranormal abilities enabling them to battle the horror of their past. With prose that is crisp and clear, the pages seem to turn themselves. The main characters Areenna and Mikaal work well together in the usual boy/girl ways, but this is more than a tale of love or loss, it is a tale of hardship and redemption, with some uncertain triumphs over evil. Readers can't go wrong here; pick it up.

'Alive at Sunset'

“There was no place in her life for pretty things –if there were, it was only for them to get destroyed.” That's a quote from 'Alive at Sunset' from author Kayla Krantz. Part two in the Rituals of the Night series, this is a frightening tale indeed. The author put me, the reader, into a world of revenge, love and murder. While reading in a darkened room I had to put the book away, as I did not want the characters following me off to dreamland! There are bad things happening here that will send chills down your spine. Really, who doesn't love a great scary story?

'London Large: Blood on the Streets'

Crime readers are always searching for books that have fast action, intriguing characters, and a plot that pulls you in. In "London Large: Blood on the Streets" authors Roy and Garry Robson accomplish all of this and more. The story of an old school London copper that finds himself under siege in a gang war. Can he see through a high-level conspiracy and rescue his partner from kidnappers? And will he step outside the law to do so? Populated with complex characters and plenty of action this novel is the first in a 3 part series that follows Inspector Harry 'H' Hawkins. Not quite Dirty Harry, but the next best thing. Even seasoned readers will be surprised by some of the twists as they are guided through the dark streets of London.

'The Absolution of Otto Finkel'

'The Absolution of Otto Finkel' by John McKay is a fascinating story, full of action and adventure…all told with skill and grace. The story is set in Europe in the era of World War Two. Told without any political agenda it starts out in 1928: Five friends are involved in an incident leaving a man dead and one of the boys disfigured. 1940: Now men, each chooses to serve their respective countries in different ways. Years later - memories fade, but not for Otto.  What I loved about this book was that there are powerful examples of average people in trying times deciding daily between morality and survival. I have been left awe-struck. So, thank you John for writing this book. It has been an honour.

'The Way Knight'

The Way Knight by Alexander Wallis is a dark fantasy tale about a girl named Daimonia and her journey from child to goddess. When corrupt politicians execute her brother, she travels to her mother. To survive the journey, she hires a warrior sworn to protect anyone who pays him. The author goes to great lengths to show the inner turmoil that faces Daimonia. And the world was so intriguing, as the author describes the scenery in a beautiful creative way. Also, the little Illustrations gave the book a more life-like reading experience. All-in-all a nice little read.

'Aurelia'

Wow, what a series. If you haven't started this series yet, you are really missing out. Here, author Alison Morton presents a thrilling prequel in the alternative history of the Roma Nova series, the fourth book to be precise, and keeps up all the great momentum and thrill from the first three books. If you've read any of the first three books then you know what to expect, and what you get is exactly what you'd hoped for.

This intriguing story continues....

'Melophobia'

A place where all music is outlawed!! That is my worst nightmare, so I just had to read 'Melophobia' by author James Morris :p If you like a good love story, bedded in an alternative history with a Nazi-Style government in control, you will absolutely love this book. The story of Merrin Pierce who is in search of a fugitive, but she soon finds herself drawn to the sweet sound of his music. I've read many a story about alternate worlds and this one is right up there. The characters are believable and the writing is crisp, which makes for a fast read. A solid book form this author and a good introduction to his writing.

'The Border Reiver'

'The Border Reiver' is a fantastic story from a fantastic writer. And Nick Christofides is that writer. The alternate-world setting is both well-imagined and evoked in a non-intrusive telling way. Instead of beating up the reader with polemics about complex issues like the erosion of civil liberties or the geopolitical conflicts of the region, this book tells its story in a way that is accessible and relevant to people who don't have patience for politics. Told from the perspective of real people dealing with extraordinary circumstances you can't help but be entertained. The main character Nat, starts out a bit two-dimensional but grows to be three-dimensional over the course of the story. Atmospheric at times, this book was well worth the read.

'Soul Loss'

After reading the first three instalments of the Mae Martin Mystery Series, I just had to get the forth "Soul Loss". Set in New Mexico, this charming tale goes looking for answers in the spirit world. Always a wonderful story from author Amber Foxx. She gave the reader a feeling of being there and with people that became familiar quickly. Great character development and descriptions - you could easily identify with the people. Not very complex but it was a perfect length and a perfect escape.

'Dex Territory'

Recommend to fans of Gotham and those who like their novels with lots of action and substance. 'Dex Territory' by Mark Aberdeen gives you a kick in the face, but in a joyful way that you'll like. After a long week at work, I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense and settings of this hard-boiled detective story. The author captures the unique detail of each character, making them real as if the reader already knows them personally. He masterfully lets the reader enjoy the vibrant warmth and charm of the main character Rick O'Shea as he intertwines the strengths and flaws in all of the character as the plot unfolds. Excellent read!
